Global Carbon Pricing Challenge (GCPC)
From Squarespace to Drupal CMS in Just 4 Weeks
A Website Relaunch in Record Time
How do you migrate the website of an international climate initiative to a new CMS in just four weeks—without compromising on quality, accessibility, or future-proofing? That’s exactly what we did: a complete relaunch from Squarespace to Drupal CMS.
- Project Duration, Phase 1: four weeks
- Migration: from Squarespace to Drupal CMS
- Technology: Dripyard Site Template, Drupal Canvas, Single Directory Components (SDC)
- Result: accessible, GDPR-compliant, component-based

The Global Carbon Pricing Challenge: Climate Protection Through CO₂ Pricing
The Global Carbon Pricing Challenge (GCPC) is an international initiative that advocates for effective CO₂ pricing and is supported by countries and international organizations. Its goal: By 2030, 60% of global emissions are to be covered by CO₂ pricing. By joining the GCPC, countries send a clear signal that pollution must not come at no cost—and underscore the urgency of effective climate policy instruments.
With the launch of the initiative’s second phase in 2026, Sweden took over the chairmanship from Canada. As part of this transition, we took over and modernized the GCPC website—commissioned by adelphi global gGmbH, which, together with the International Emissions Trading Association (IETA), provides the initiative’s secretariat.

The Challenge: A Complete Relaunch in Just 4 Weeks
The timeline for the first phase of the project was extremely tight: Within just four weeks, the website was to be migrated from Squarespace to Drupal virtually 1:1—using the existing corporate design and content. At the same time, modern web standards were not to be neglected. The following were considered must-haves:
- Accessibility in accordance with current standards
- Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
- Consent Management
- Open-source foundation without vendor lock-in
- GDPR-compliant hosting with full data control within the EU
Given the tight timeframe, only these basic requirements would have been realistically achievable—anything beyond that would normally have remained a pipe dream.
The Solution: Drupal CMS Meets a Dripyard Site Template
Choosing the right tools made all the difference: Drupal CMS with its preconfigured Recipes, combined with a Dripyard site template. This combination not only enabled the extremely fast implementation required, but also allowed us to deliver significantly more than was originally expected given the tight timeline.
In addition to the must-haves, we were able to implement the following nice-to-have features:
- Single Directory Components (SDC) as modern, reusable building blocks within the theme
- Full integration of these components into Drupal Canvas, Drupal’s new visual page builder
- Grouping UI components into reusable UI patterns, which significantly simplifies further page building
- A technically powerful Drupal installation, enhanced by the ECA module and Drupal AI Readiness is also ready for future automation and AI use cases
This pace was also made possible by recent developments within the Drupal ecosystem itself: With Drupal CMS 2.0, it has become clear just how much speed an open-source CMS can deliver today without sacrificing enterprise-grade capabilities.
Result: Exceeded requirements
The end result was a Drupal website based on a component-oriented architecture that significantly exceeds the original requirements. The GCPC editors now work with the best of both worlds:
- Recurring content such as news or events is managed as classic nodes in the backend—familiar and simple.
- Top-level pages, on the other hand, are assembled directly in Drupal Canvas using components from the design system and serve as flexible landing pages as well as a modular building block repository for future new sections.
For backend operations, editors also have access to the tried-and-true Gin Admin Theme. All in all, the result is a project whose scope actually corresponds to that of a significantly larger undertaking—and a technical foundation that sets no limits on further content or technical development.
Challenges in the Project
The biggest challenge was—and remains—the tight timeline: completing the entire project in 4 weeks as part of a competitive proposal. Added to this was the task of adapting the Dripyard theme to GCPC’s existing corporate design, as well as integrating the existing content as seamlessly as possible into the specified site template structures, content types, and media types. In cases where a simple 1:1 transfer wasn’t possible, the theme’s 74 reusable UI components and a manageable extension of our own single-directory components in the code ensured a precise result.
Another notable feature: Since the original website ran on Squarespace, the editors were accustomed to a very simple editing experience. Thanks to the Gin backend and Drupal Canvas, the new Drupal version was able to not only maintain this familiar level of ease of use but even surpass it.
This project demonstrates how, with Drupal CMS and a suitable site template, even tight deadlines can be handled with ease—without compromising on quality, accessibility, or technical future-proofing. For initiatives with an international presence, such as the GCPC, this is a double win: a website that makes a strong impression today and a platform that can continue to grow tomorrow.
As a Drupal agency based in Konstanz, we help organizations implement exactly these kinds of projects reliably and quickly.
